History of Calvary Baptist
A local church presence in the West Collingswood Heights section of Haddon Township began with the founding of a community Sunday School in the fall of 1935. The first meeting place was in the facilities of the West Collingswood Heights Fire Company located at the corner of Nicholson Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. The Fire Company has since relocated to a larger facility at the corner of Nicholson Road and New Jersey Avenue. Church records indicate that the first offering received totaled $2.54 which was a rather generous sum for those days. As interest in the work grew and attendance increased, members of this community Sunday School began looking for a more permanent location and place to construct a church building. A church building fund was established and over the next several years reached a total of $4,845.53. In 1939 officials of Haddon Township were approached by several members of the Community Sunday School of West Collingswood Heights, to inquire about obtaining some ground to build a church on. That same year four lots were secured for the sum of $50.00. The official breaking of ground at 117 Nicholson Road took place on May 3, 1947 with Mr. W. Warner, Sunday School superintendent presiding over the ceremony. The service opened with prayer, and the reading of Ezra chapter 1 and Ezra chapter 3:11. The service closed with prayer and the reciting of the Lord's Prayer from Matthew chapter 6. The cornerstone of the main church building was laid on November 10, 1948.
In 1954 an addition to the main building was completed which supplied additional meeting rooms and a fellowship hall. In 1961 Pastor Daniel P. Schieber, a decorated World War II veteran and graduate of Bob Jones University, accepted the call to become the Pastor of First Community Baptist Church. In 1972 First Community Baptist Church became Calvary Baptist Church. For almost 40 years,since 1961, Pastor Dan Schieber and his wife Carol labored faithfully upholding the cause of Christ and endeavoring to see lives impacted and changed by the Word of God. In the late 1990's the congregation of Calvary Baptist Church issued a call to Pastor Timothy P. Schieber, son of Pastor Dan and Carol Schieber, to assume the position of pastoring the congregation and ministry of Calvary Baptist Church. The work and ministry of Calvary Baptist continues in the neighborhood of West Collingswood Heights, NJ. The Pastor and people of Calvary Baptist praise God for the souls have been reached for Jesus Christ and the lives that have been impacted by the preaching of the Bible! To God be the glory great things He hath done!
